The Fleury family settled in Southern Champagne, Côte des Bar. Rich in clay-limstone (Kimmeridgian) hillsides, focusing on Pinot Noir in 1895 after the phylloxera, by Emile. His son Robert started producing wines in 1929, becoming “Récoltant-manipulant” (wines from grapes exclusively sourced from own vineyards).
Jean-Pierre Fleury took over in 1962, and started practicing ecological farming with mechanical weeding and organic fertilizer as early as 1970.
Eventually the Champagne house went fully biodynamic in 1989, the first in the region with certification, and released the first biodynamic cuvee in 1993.
Jean Pierre was elected Winemaker of the Year by Gault Millau that year. The secret maybe from the valuable notebooks from his grandfather Robert, with all the weather information and evolution of their vineyard, therefore Fleury is undoubtedly the master of biodynamic farming.
Jean-Sébastien took over in winemaking in 2009 as the fourth generation, and launched the first sulphur-free wine, Sonate No. 9 at the same year.
