Classified as a fifth growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, bought by the Tesseron family in 1975, the vineyard was in poor condition. The chateau is now under the management of Alfred Tesseron since 1994. With the help of Jean-Michel Comme, Alfred began to experiment the possibilities of going biodynamic in 2004, testing with Merlot in the beginning. The results were excellent and the chateau went fully biodynamic in 2005. Horses are used in the vineyards, and with a plan to work the vineyard entirely with horses. Other famous chateaux following the method, like Chateau Latour and Chateau Margaux and many more. In 2010, Chateau Pontet Canet became the first major Bordeaux producer awarded organic and biodynamic farming certification.
For 2008, the blend includes 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.
